Rep. Jim Grego

By Rep. Jim Grego

Once again, political violence has reared its ugly head with the assassination of conservative Charlie Kirk. This young man was making a difference on our college campuses, letting our students know that there is a place for conservative values in our society. He was taken too soon. Please keep his wife and young family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate through this difficult time.

St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School may have lost its fight to receive public funding due first to an attorney general’s opinion then proceeding to a tied U.S. Supreme Court ruling. The idea, however, lives on with the opening of an online Catholic school minus public funding. One of the original arguments was that this would open the door for any and all religions to take advantage of this funding. My question is how many other religions are going it alone without any funding.

As the process begins for another legislative session, I attended Latimer County Farm Bureau’s annual meeting. This is where the grassroots starts for ideas or resolutions members would like to see proceed. One resolution mentioned was the power of our county assessors to determine how small rural properties are classified as agriculture or residential. This classification represents a significant difference in total property taxes owed. House legal staff is exploring this issue. It also was brought up about excise tax on new vehicles. Under the current process, buyers pay excise tax on total value without any consideration for trade-in. I view the trade-in as something that has already been taxed once, and the current process in my mind is double taxation.
