“Fairs and festivals” seem to be the themes around this part of the state lately, This past weekend was the annual Choctaw Nation Labor Day Festival in Tuskahoma along with the Cherokee Nation celebrations in Tahlequah. These celebrations bring in so many people and the dollars they spend help our local economies. Now we turn our attention to “free fairs” with Latimer and Pittsburg counties having there’s this weekend. There is something for everyone at these events, but mostly we show support for our youth.
This week I’ll be attending a master class focusing on the “Future of Farming.” We’ll discuss changes necessary to feed an ever growing human population. It promises to be interesting at the least.
Interim studies are in full force at the Capitol. This week before the House Judiciary-Civil Committee, there are studies on parental rights and confidentiality of personal information. The Elections and Ethics Committee will hear a study on the effectiveness of the Oklahoma Ethics Commission.
Our House and Senate Joint Committee on Pandemic Relief Funding and its working groups also have been holding meetings to determine how best to spend the state’s remaining portion of relief dollars. Some will go to rural water infrastructure projects. Some will go to broadband expansion. Others will go toward continued training to get more nursing candidates through school and into our hospitals and clinics, and others will go toward meeting mental health care needs in the state, as well as other projects.
