Gary Jones, the current Oklahoma State Auditor and candidate for Governor, will be in LeFlore County Monday, November 6.


The public is invited to meet him at a come-and-go reception that evening from 5:30 to 7 at Senator Allen's office in Spiro, 19399 Highway 271.

 

About Gary Jones


Jones was born at Fort Sill August 27, 1954, the fifth of seven children to MSGT James J. & Clara Jones. Gary started school at Jefferson Elementary in Lawton but like most military families moved and also attended school in Coleman, Texas, and Hanau, Germany. He returned to Lawton attending Eisenhower Jr. High, graduating in 1972 from Eisenhower Sr. High.

 

In fall of 1972, Gary entered Cameron University full time while also working full time for Southwestern Bell Telephone. At age 20, Gary was promoted into management for Southwestern Bell as one of the youngest managers in company history. At age 21 he was promoted again to Southwestern Bell state headquarters in Oklahoma City. While in Oklahoma City, Gary attended night school at Central State University which is now the University of Central Oklahoma.

 

Gary returned to Lawton in June of 1977 to wed Mary Jane Horton, a 1975 Cameron graduate and first grade teacher in Lawton. Gary attended night classes at Cameron and graduated in July 1978 having earned a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting.

 

Jones worked for Bell for 10 years before starting a telecommunications company he owned and operated for 16 years. He was elected as Comanche County Western District Commissioner in August 1994 and served 4 years.

In January 1999, Gary returned to Cameron to finish the requirements needed to sit for the CPA exam. In May 2000, he fulfilled his original collegiate goal and became a Certified Public Accountant.

Gary and Mary Jane have been married for 40 years and live on their farm southwest of Cache where, together, they raised two children, and built their cow-calf operation of over 30 years. Mary Jane retired in May 2011, after a 36-year teaching career.

 

Their daughter, Kelly Gilland is a pre-K teacher at Chattanooga Elementary School. Son, Chris, manages the family farm and is a former member of the United States Marine Corps. The Joneses have three wonderful grandchildren.

Gary has spent much of his adult life seeking to expand government accountability and to improve the delivery of government services. In addition to being a CPA, Gary is also a Certified Fraud Examiner.

 

Gary was elected Oklahoma Republican Party Chairman in 2003 and is distinguished as the longest serving Chairman and Executive Director in the storied history of the state party.


He resigned his position in 2010 to make a third attempt at being elected State Auditor & Inspector.This time, he was successful and was re-elected in 2014 when he stood unopposed for the office.
