WASHINGTON—Congressman Markwayne Mullin (OK-2) released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 1, the Democrat Politician Protection Act:
“By bringing H.R 1 to a vote, Washington Democrats have defined their big plans to keep the swamp swampy,” said Mullin. “Apparently their idea of ‘free and fair elections’ doles out taxpayer money to fund political campaigns, creates security vulnerabilities in the voter registration process, limits voters free speech, and allows the federal government to meddle in the states’ election process. This is a gross overreach of power by Democrats and an incredible show of constitutional overreach. I strongly reject the bill and its principles.”
H.R. 1, the “For the People” Act:
• Creates a 6:1 government match to any small donor contributions of $200 or less in a congressional or presidential campaign, meaning for every $200, the federal government will match $1,200.
• Creates a new voucher pilot program that grants eligible voters a $25 voucher of hard-earned taxpayer dollars to donate to any campaign of their choosing. This voucher will then be matched 6:1 with taxpayer money.
• Weaponizes the Federal Election Commission by altering the current bipartisan makeup of a six-member commission to a partisan five-member commission which will limit free speech and make partisan decisions about election communications.
• Disregards state voter identification laws by allowing sworn statements to be used in place of identification and allowing for signature verification, which can be submitted through a photo if the voter registers online.
