# 237 – Support Live Music –LeFlore Co. Area by Terry Joe Wiles
If ya know me then you will easily understand when I say- I was born with two left feet and I’m almost wider than I am tall. I am NOT built to be a basketball player. Nor am I graceful enough to be a dancer. But I learned at a purty early age that there is music in me and it’s gotta come out. Picking and singing are learned traits. Almost hereditary, passed from one generation to another. It is often discovered and inspired by observing the magic, the joy, the communication and the love on the front porch at family gatherings. I know that’s how I found release. Please take part Sat. 26th with family and friends. Picking, singing, and sharing the joy of the blessing called Music. Get together on somebody’s Front Porch to celebrate “Picking on the Porch Day”. Call me if there is “homemade ice cream”!
Open Mic Nite at the Coffee Cup! Friday 25th is the Best place to hear some of the younger musicians in our area. It’s on the Patio with plenty of seats. It’s outside so you can bring a lawnchair, too. Sign-up and sing or just listen to this sample of the awesome talent. Some will be playing a show later in Sept. at the Cup. Sign up to sing. Music starts at 6pm.
Eugene “Red” Earls, a Pioneer in Country Music in our area, passed on to Hillbilly Heaven on August 13th. Red and Jeri Earls shared their love of music every Sat. nite as they hosted the Jam Session at the Poteau Senior Center for many years. It was just a front porch picking done inside. Countless musicians sat in a semicircle and sang a couple of songsin turn, again and again. Listen to Tex Ritter’s song, Hillbilly Heaven. That is where Red is now. Tapping his foot and picking along with the band. I can just see the smile on his face. What a blessing and a just reward. R.I.P. Red Earls. My prayers are for the family. Live Music this week- One of the best chances to hear some picking is over at the Pocola Senior Activity Center. It is Tuesday 22nd, just before lunch from 10am til Noon. The band is a real treat-
“Vida Brooks and the High Mt. Bluegrass band”. Great lunch served, too.
Jazz at the Museum- Tues 22nd at 6pm, “The Al Grzech Trio” will be joined by Miss Nikki Waters. The concert will be Jazz Standards and Pop Classics. Three seasoned musicians, Al Grzech/Piano, David Hoffpauir/guitar and Dale Fraze Sr/drums are members of several of the most popular bands in our area so the music is solid and always interesting. Add a touch of class, featured singer Nikki Waters comes thru UFSA music as a member of the Jazz Catz. To get invited to be a member, a singer has to be talented and promising. Nikki is proving herself with shows in our area and paying her dues with plans of a career in music. I can promise that you will be entertained. It is in an awesome setting at the LeFlore County Museum dining room at the Lowry Hotel in Downtown Poteau. See ya there.
Upcoming Live Music events- First Friday, Sept. 1st, “The Stagemasters will be in the Pocket Park/Poteau.~Just up the road a piece, The Rentiesville Blues Fest will be Sept. 1st-2nd-3rd from early morning til late at night. There’s a flier out.~The Poteau High School all-class Reunion is Sept. 2nd and “Even Keel” will play for the dance.~”Bob Callaway and the Clicks” bring their Rock-a-billy sound on Sat. Sept. 2nd to JJ’s Grill. Music from 7-10pm.~The 10th Annual Shane Bailey Memorial Bash, Friday 15th, from 6-10pm in the Bakery District, Ft Smith. Several great bands play at this fundraiser for the Shane Bailey Memorial Music Society.~The Heavener Runestone “Music On the Mountain” Fest takes place on Sat. Oct. 7th from Noon til 10pm. “Mj and the Geezers” host and provide the sound for singers and bands. Family Friendly and there’s a beautiful view from the overlooks in the Park.~OktoberFest in Downtown Poteau happens Oct. 14th. Ten(10) hours of music, craft beer and good times. Live music this weekend- Dawn’s Diner/Red Oak has music by “59 South” on Friday 25th. Classic Country and Rock to dance with your pardner or just Dance alone like nobody’s watching. Then, it will be R&R from “Grannie’s Nightmare” on Sat. 26th. The Hardest working, Entertainin’est, most Interacting R&R Band around. Good food- awesome music! Music starts at 6pm.
‘Cross the line in Hackett, Ark. Crocky’s Cafe has awesome food and really cool music to enjoy. Friday 25th, Mike “MG and the Quiet Storm” Linzini . And the music of Paden Baggett, singer-songwriter on Sat. 26th. Both nites at 6 pm.
“Oklahoma Moon” will be featured and play along with the all the pickers at West Fork Lil’ Ole Opry on Sat 26th. Just a short drive for a lotta good music. It starts at 7pm. “Shady Oak Tribadours” will make another appearance at Warehouse Willys on Sat. 26th. It’s a great place to have a bite and listen to the band. Music is from 5:30 til 9pm. Come by and become a fan. Be a Tribadour!
Muldrow City Limits continues to be the favorite place to dance. Even thru the hot Summer, the attendance has been 75-100. Good thang it has such a big dance floor. Sat. 26th , it’s the “Richard Rauch Band”. They are a favorite here so get there early. Music starts at 7pm. “Rhythm Coalition” will bring their music to the Sallisaw VFW on Sat. 26th. Hours are 9pm til 1 am. Come join in the good times.
