Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton has received a $16 million unrestricted gift from Mackenzie Scott, the former wife of Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos, through her Yield Giving Foundation. It’s said to be the largest gift in the school’s history. Who could have ever imagined or dreamed such a gift would be presented to this 117-year-old school.

The college’s Development Foundation will work with college administration to determine the best use of the money. Foundation leaders said decisions will be guided by a long-term view of student success, workforce development and regional impact. This is such great news for our area.

This is the fifth state higher education institution to receive a major gift from Scott, all totaling $75 million. In 2019, this philanthropist pledged to give away most of her wealth; much of it has gone to colleges and universities. Such generosity is greatly appreciated, and I know this will be put to good use.

Another piece of good news for our area is the Stephenson Cancer Center’s planned opening in McAlester on Dec. 15. Southeast Oklahomans facing a cancer diagnosis will now have access to advanced treatment without having to travel to Oklahoma City or Tulsa.

This center is part of the University of Oklahoma Health network. In spring 2024, OU Health began seeing cancer patients at McAlester Regional Hospital while renovations for this new center were underway. On Dec. 3, officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new center at 901 N Strong Blvd.

It is reported that Oklahoma’s cancer mortality rate is 14% higher than the national average, and rural counties see 20% to 30% higher death rates for lung, colorectal, kidney and cervical cancers. This collaboration between OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center and McAlester Regional ensures that location and geography no longer determine survival.

On a final note, I met recently with our area agriculture teachers for their annual dinner. It is always good to be able to visit with groups like this to hear their concerns and visions for the future of agriculture education. Lessons I learned in FFA still guide me today. I’m confident that years from now these students will reflect back on what they are learning today.

As always, I’m thankful to the constituents of House District 17 for allowing me to serve. If I can help you in any way, I can be reached at (405) 557-7381 or by email at jim.grego@okhouse.gov.
