Wintertime in Oklahoma is a great time to get outdoors for fishing but ensure cold-weather safety comes first. Conditions can change quickly, and being prepared can make the difference between a great day on the water and a dangerous situation. Keep these key safety tips in mind before heading out.
Wear a Life Jacket:
Always wear a life jacket or keep one easily accessible. Cold water shock and slippery conditions leave little room for error. One misstep can be life changing.
Dress in Layers:
Layered clothing helps regulate body temperature and allows you to adjust as conditions change throughout the day. Start with moisture-wicking base layers and add insulation and a weather-resistant outer layer.
Keep Extremities Warm:
Hands, feet, and your head lose heat fastest. Wear gloves, wool socks, and a warm hat, and consider hand and foot warmers when temperatures drop.
Take a Buddy:
It’s more fun to fish with friends. Always bring a buddy so help is available if something goes wrong. Cold weather is no time to take chances.
