State Rep. Jim Grego

By Rep. Jim Grego

Week 13 is upon us at the Legislature. The pace is rather relaxed as we wait on Senate passage of our House bills. We are beginning in earnest to consider Senate bills on the House floor, but it’s nothing like our deadline week to pass House bills in our chamber. Bills have to pass both the House and Senate before they get sent to the governor for his consideration of signing them into law. I count 28 House bills signed into law so far this year and 27 Senate bills.

Congratulations to our own Jeff Marshall, the Wilburton High School athletic director, and Chad Graham, Pittsburg Schools superintendent, on being named to a new rules committee for the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association. OSSAA has been a point of contention as of late with some of their decisions regarding eligibility of student athletes. Hopefully, with some locals on this committee, some of this dissension can be resolved.

I had the opportunity to attend Wilburton’s VFW Loyalty Day celebration. This is a much overlooked holiday, but the fact remains that Loyalty Day was established to declare loyalty to our United States and to combat Communism. What made this year special was the several 4-H members who were present. Hopefully, this holiday will continue to be celebrated and grow.

Last week was 4-H Day at the Capitol. I had the pleasure of having lunch with several of our local 4-H students. I wish to congratulate Greg Owen for his work. Greg is a 4-H educator in Pittsburg County. I’m hoping he will continue in the future to develop our future leaders. This is such a great organization that helps kids learn more about agriculture, the responsibility of taking care of animals and showing them in our livestock judging contests, as well as working on projects that help prepare them for future careers.

We also had Career Tech Day at the Legislature on Tuesday. Our Career Techs do a lot to help train our kids for life and future careers. I’m glad for all they do.

As always, I’m thankful to the constituents of House District 17 for allowing me to serve. If I can help you in any way, I can be reached at (405) 557-7381 or by email at jim.grego@okhouse.gov.
