Round two is in the books. What started out as numerous candidates for many state and local offices was narrowed to two in each race in the primary runoff. Now, that number is one from each major party that will face off in November. There were some stark differences between the candidates, but now the parties have spoken and it’s time to unite behind the candidates chosen. This system has served us well for many years, and my hope is it will continue to work. As we listen to the onslaught of negative ads, I’m reminded of what my mom used to tell us often: “If you can’t say anything nice about someone, then don’t say anything at all.” Somehow, this doesn’t seem to apply to politics.
We don’t have any interim studies in the House of Representatives this week, but we have several scheduled for next week. One will look at best water conservation practices. Another will look at workforce development. More studies are scheduled later this month and into October. These are open to the public and can be viewed online on our House website, OKHouse.gov, under News and Media, then Live Proceedings. Search by date to find various studies before our House committees.
Last week, I toured the prison at McAlester. Every time I go behind the walls it reminds me about the men and women who protect us daily as administrators and guards. I don’t believe I could work in this environment, but I am proud we have people ready to step up and fill these roles.
Next Monday is Labor Day, signaling the end of summer. With the recent temperatures we’ve experienced in the state, I believe most are ready for an end of this season.
