OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma House Democratic Caucus members oppose a new executive order from the Governor that directs the Oklahoma Department of Human Services and the Oklahoma Healthcare Authority to verify the documentation status of applicants for programs including Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Medicaid.

“The Governor’s executive order threatens the public health and safety of children in Oklahoma,” said House Democratic Leader Cyndi Munson, D-Oklahoma City. “By spreading misinformation, fearmongering, and turning harmful rhetoric into policy that bypasses the legislative process is not solving a single problem Oklahoma families are facing. We know the error rate for eligibility for vital programs such as TANF, SNAP, and Medicaid is already low, and the majority of errors are due to administrative issues that must be fixed. By barring parents to access programs and services for their children to keep them fed and healthy is anything but pro-life by a self-proclaimed pro-life Governor. It is a gross display of politics meant to incite fear and divisiveness in the upcoming election cycle.”

Oklahoma House Democratic Caucus Secretary and Oklahoma Legislative Latino Caucus Member Rep. Arturo Alonso-Sandoval, D-Oklahoma City, says the executive order will put Oklahoma children at risk.

“Whether it be through bills like HB4422 and HB4423 or through the Governor’s recent executive order, we have to recognize that policies like this will only harm children,” said Rep. Alonso-Sandoval. “The children most impacted are innocent, American-born citizens. These kids, many of whom may have undocumented parents, are still entitled to public benefits. As a state, I believe we must always do what we can to provide resources for the sick and ensure that no child goes hungry, regardless of where their parents may have come from.”
