This week, I attended an interim study simply entitled “Water.” It was interesting, to say the least. It mostly focused on role of the Oklahoma Water Resources Board and their role in permitting groundwater. This is an issue as much of Western Oklahoma’s water is from wells and underground aquafers. One speaker of interest was Tom Kimball, a board member of the Grand River Dam Authority. He presented his ideas about piping water west for economic development. My opinion has always been that economic development can come to Eastern Oklahoma where the water is plentiful rather than piping it west for their benefit. So we will see as this legislative season progresses.
Sallisaw Veterans Home hosted their grand opening last week. I was unable to attend. From what I am hearing, they are experiencing difficulty in filling their beds. I believe they are possibly doing some type of recruitment drive. Some of my difficulty in understanding is that this is a brand-new facility and having difficulties in getting patients to reside there. When the Talihina Center was fully functional, many times there was a waiting list of people wanting to reside there. Go figure.
Congratulations to Yvette Martin, McAlester’s tag agent, on being appointed to a Service Oklahoma Advisory Board. Yvette was appointed by our own speaker of the House as his choice for this important position. Often, we need a little southern Oklahoma common sense in Oklahoma City. Thank you, Speaker Hilbert, and thank you, Yvette, for your willingness to serve.
