September is Childhood Obesity Month, and it’s a time to raise awareness of a health crisis that affects Oklahomans today and will have repercussions well into the future. In Oklahoma, 18.7% of kids ages 10-17 are obese. Sugary drinks, unhealthy food and a lack of physical activity are key reasons why Oklahomans children are at an unhealthy weight.
Childhood obesity can lead to lifelong physical and mental health issues such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, depression and at least 13 types of cancer. Additionally, a child that suffers from obesity is more likely to become an obese adult, making this a life-long health struggle.
Shape Your Future, a TSET-funded program, provides extensive information about obesity to educate Oklahomans.
Shape Your Future offers practical tips for families, educators and communities.
We each have a role to play in creating a healthy future and modeling healthy behavior to the next generation. Taking action now will have a dramatic impact on the lives of our children and their future.
