Emma Lou Smith, of Poteau, Oklahoma, was born on October 7, 1934, in Briceville, Tennessee, to Alvis and Litha Bell (Duncan) Melton. She passed away on March 15, 2026, in Poteau at the age of 91, surrounded by the love of her family.

Emma’s life was defined by devotion — to her family, to her faith, and most especially to her beloved husband of 72 years, Dewey E. Smith. Together, they built a life rich in love, laughter, and unwavering commitment. Their bond was a beautiful example of a lifelong partnership rooted in tenderness and strength.

Matthew Smith, Andrew Smith, Hannah Harder, Tim Harder, Carrie Beckwith, Katherine Hollifield, and Courtney Demure

Nine Great‑Grandchildren:

Cris Chancellor, Connor Chancellor, Cali Chancellor, Dustin Wiesner, Braeden Wiesner, Mason Smith, Aidan Hollifield, Valerie Smith, and Noah Beckwith

She is also cherished by numerous other loved ones and a multitude of friends whose lives were brightened by her kindness.

Emma was preceded in death by her parents, Alvis and Litha Bell Melton; her daughter, Paige Carrie Wright; three sisters, Drusilla (Melton) Harber, Rosytine (Melton) Graham, and Della Mae (Melton) Seiber; and four brothers, Leon Melton, Mose Smith Melton, Billy Joe Melton, and James Carl Melton.

A long‑time resident of the Poteau area, Emma was a devoted homemaker and a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Poteau. She and Dewey shared a love for traveling the world together; creating memories that became treasured stories for their family.

Emma’s warmth, gentle spirit, and deep love for her family and friends left a lasting imprint on every heart she touched. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great‑grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. Her presence brought comfort, her smile brought joy, and her love will continue to live on in all who knew her.

Emma will be profoundly missed, yet forever remembered with love.
