Garry M. Ivey, 77, of Poteau, Oklahoma, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on May 25, 2026. He was born August 15, 1948, in Whitesboro, Oklahoma, to Mason and Winifred Ivey.
Garry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, educator, and friend. He loved his family deeply and treasured every moment spent with them. His greatest joy was his seven grandsons, one great-granddaughter, and Sue’s great-granddaughters, whom he adored as his own. He was also joyfully anticipating the arrival of his second great-granddaughter expected in July.
Garry dedicated much of his life to education and service. He began his career at Carl Albert State College in 1979 as a teacher and faithfully served through the years, ultimately retiring as president. His commitment to education and his community left a lasting impact on countless students, colleagues, and friends. Beyond his professional life, Garry devoted himself to his family, church activities, community service through local boards, and his love for the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife Sue (Hollie) Taylor Dunn Ivey, of the home; daughters, Lauri and Leon Lowrimore of Spiro, Oklahoma, and Leslie and Nathan Bain of Russellville, Arkansas; son, Steve and Larissa Ivey of Bixby, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Martin Lowrimore of Edmond, Oklahoma; Casey and Caitlyn Lowrimore of Cameron, Oklahoma; Jonathan and Maddie Bain, and great-granddaughter Lydia, of Poteau, Oklahoma; Joshua and Paige Bain of Russellville, Arkansas; Jordan Bain of Russellville, Arkansas; Mason and Garrett Ivey of Bixby, Oklahoma; brother, Mark Ivey and wife Connie of Shawnee, Oklahoma, as well as numerous loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pamela J. Ivey; his brother, Ronnie Ivey; and his parents.
Family visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at Evans-Miller Funeral Home in Poteau, Oklahoma.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, May 29, 2026, at Covenant (Assembly of God) Church located in Poteau, Oklahoma. A family-only graveside service will immediately follow. Pallbearers will be his seven grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Gideons International for the purchase of Bibles in Garry’s honor.
