James was born on August 28, 1952, to Louise Barnes (Kilgore) and Forest Doyle Barnes. He passed away peacefully on May 8, 2025, in McCurtain, Oklahoma.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louise Kilgore and Forrest Barnes, and Nyle Yates Sr.; siblings Miles Nelson, George Walkup, Nyle Yates Jr., Sonny Yates; and nephew KJ Yates.
James loved the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting—pastimes that brought him great joy throughout his life.
He is survived by his daughter, Eva Tomlin and husband Michael; sons James Barnes, Jerry Barnes, and Hollis Barnes; sisters Billie Wilson, Teresa West, Pamela Svendson, Romona Kichler, Susie Rhoades, and Sarah Kroth; brother Kenny Yates; grandchildren Steven and Tanya Barnes, Chris and Megan Barnes, Keila Barnes, Camrie Barnes, Josh Tomlin, and Kabree Barnes; and great-grandchildren Devin, Payzlee, Tucker, Dayzee, Eli, and Kaine. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many loved ones.
