Joey was born on September 12, 1950, at his family home in Pocola, Oklahoma, to Harlow and Juanita Karl.
From a very young age, Joey experienced seizures that left him with significant developmental disabilities. Although his words were often difficult for others to understand, those who knew him best understood him well. More importantly, Joey had a way of communicating that needed no words at all. His contagious smile, infectious laugh, and playful sense of humor spoke volumes and brought joy to everyone around him.
Growing up, Joey enjoyed riding horses, and spending time with his siblings. He loved rodeos, Elvis, John Deere tractors, and all things cowboy. From his favorite hats and boots to his treasured tractor toys and western keepsakes. Those who knew Joey will always remember him by his familiar cowboy hat, cowboy boots, bright smile, and joyful spirit.
Joey was blessed with a family who faithfully cared for him throughout his life. His mother, Juanita, devoted herself to meeting his every need for many years. As the years passed, his sister Joyce and her husband, Sumler Conrad, welcomed Joey into many treasured adventures. They frequently took Joey and Juanita on weekend trips to Branson, where he delighted in watching Elvis tribute shows, shopping, sightseeing, and making lasting memories together.
Later, Joey made his home with Joyce and Sumler, who continued to provide him with exceptional love and care. They made sure he was able to enjoy the life he loved and the experiences that brought him happiness. After Joyce went home to be with the Lord in July 2025, Joey moved into the home of his niece, Tanya Cusick, and her husband, Rick. Though age gradually made him more frail, Joey never lost his joyful spirit or his love of laughing and joking in his own special way.
Joey was preceded in death by his parents, Harlow and Juanita Karl; his sisters, Virginia McKinney and Joyce Conrad; and his brothers, James Karl, Fritz Karl, and Wendell Karl.
He is survived by his loving nieces, Tanya Cusick and her husband, Rick, and Tamera Floyd and her husband, Brad; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
While Joey’s life looked different from many, it was filled with unwavering love, faithful care, and countless moments of joy. His family finds comfort in knowing he is now whole, at perfect peace, and reunited with those who welcomed him into the presence of his Savior.
Graveside Service for Joey Dwain Karl will be at 11:00am on Friday, August 7, 2026 at New Hope Cemetery in Spiro, OK with Nolan Wynn and Rick Allison officiating. Service is under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home in Poteau, Oklahoma.
