Burial will follow at North Rock Creek in Red Oak, Oklahoma under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau, Oklahoma.
Mary Faye Sparks was born and raised in Wilburton, Oklahoma. On Main Street of Wilburton, Oklahoma her dad owned an automotive shop (Bills Garage). As you can imagine growing up with 5 brother’s right next to your father’s garage. There wasn’t much Mary Faye didn’t learn!
Mary Faye was High School Football Homecoming Queen. She worked as a high school student at Huskin’s Drug Store. She graduated Wilburton High School in 1955. She then went on to further her education at Eastern Oklahoma State College. Where she met the LOVE of her life, Cal McCullough. They soon began their life together moving to the city, even at one point lived on the OU campus. That’s where her love for her Sooners came into play. Loved her Sooner Football games.
Cal and Mary were a love match that most people could only dream of. They had together 5 beautiful girls. They decided it was time to get their girls out of the big city and bring them back home. Where Cal had purchased a lot of land in Red oak, Oklahoma. Most of you all know this area as being called McCullough Mountain. I am sure as thought I never heard Mary complain, bringing 5 girls to the mountains from the city was quite the change. Mary dove right in with Cal as they began to make their life’s work building cabins, Cal had crews of men that worked for him, Mary had to learn how to cook and feed the crew on a fireplace, as there was no electric. She adapted well and if you asked the men, “they would say she was the best cook around”. Mary also was featured on a news clip on Channel 2 News for her special Pine Needle Tea.
Over the years Mary loved going to the creek that ran alongside her house, laying out at the neighboring water hole; Wide Ford. And walking the mountain for her morning walks. She was always ready and willing to cook some crawdads up that the grandkids would bring in out of the creek at any given time.
Mary Faye was a wonderful mother, and her daughter’s Bestfriend. Mary Faye was a Beautiful Sole, that Loved to Laugh, that Loved animals, and that most of all Loved her Family. She will be greatly missed.
