NORMAN – Oklahoma men’s gymnastics junior Ignacio Yockers was named the national Specialist of the Week after his performance in the Sooners’ season-opening win over Air Force on Sunday, including a 14.450 on pommel horse, the College Gymnastics Association announced Wednesday.
Yockers won the pommel horse title with his 14.450, which was the second-highest score nationally during the first weekend (by 0.050 points). His effort helped the Sooners post the highest score in the country (318.200) through the first weekend of competition. The Tulsa, Okla., product also scored 12.750 on parallel bars and 12.300 on horizontal bar. His high bar routine was his first ever in a collegiate meet, and he competed on the event as an alternate after an injury substitution during the rotation.
This is Yockers’ seventh career national weekly award from the CGA. He has been named specialist of the week six times and was the rookie of the week once during the 2023 season.
Oklahoma travels to Colorado Springs, Colo., this weekend for the Rocky Mountain Open on Saturday, Jan. 18. The meet is set for a 7 p.m. CT start at the Air Force Academy. The Sooners return to McCasland Field House on Jan. 25 to face Illinois (5:45 p.m. start).
