statehouse OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma Legislative Black Caucus Chair Rep. Ron Stewart, D-Tulsa, passed House Resolution 1034 to recognize and celebrate Black History Month in Oklahoma.

“Black history is vital to the history of Oklahoma and our nation. I’m thankful to the House of Representatives for supporting this resolution and helping to acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of Black Oklahomans,” said Stewart.

The resolution recognizes February as Black History Month, an effort supported by the U.S. Congress in 1986, to recognize and honor the contributions of Black Oklahomans. It celebrates the accomplishments of the first Black people elected to the Oklahoma Legislature and other public offices, the establishment of Oklahoma’s only Historically Black College and University Langston University, and the creation of 50 all Black communities in Indian and Oklahoma Territories.

Tuesday, the Oklahoma Legislative Black Caucus held Black History Day at the Capitol with several local speakers, performances, and vendors.
