Hello, my name is Tommy Robertson, and I am seeking re-election for Poteau City Council, Ward 1, Seat 1.

I was born in Poteau to the late Joe Frank and Dorris (Boyd) Robertson and graduated from Poteau High School in 1977. I am a retired locomotive engineer with the Kansas City Southern Railroad. I have been married to my wife, Kim, for 35 years. We have two adult children, Kellie and husband JohnRoss Christenberry and Lane Robertson and two grandchildren, Mackenzie and Tucker Christenberry. My children graduated from Poteau Schools and my granddaughter attends there also.

I have been a Mason for 28 years and am heavily involved with the Masonic Lodge with fundraisers for those in need in our community. You may have also heard my name on the local radio station KPRV representing the LeFlore County Shriner’s. I am the point of contact to sign children up for medical needs.

I have served on the Poteau School Board and the Kibois Community Action Board prior to being elected to the Poteau City Council. I am a proud member of the Cherokee Nation.

I have always been proud of my hometown and wanted to serve and make a difference. I have kept that mind set since I was first elected to the Poteau City Council in 2009 and have seen many projects accomplished throughout the city. For example: expansion of the PARC, business development in the industrial track, building of the Donald W. Reynolds Center, construction of the Patrick Lynch Public Library, expansion and improvements at the Robert S. Kerr airport, upgrade of the both parks, Bill J. Barber and Twyman, revitalized the swimming pool, the paving of Broadway Street, rehabilitation of the sewer main between Wal-Mart and the Sewer Plant for future growth for the north end of Poteau. There are many more projects that I would like to see completed.

We have one of the best Fire Departments and Police Departments around. I have always told the men and women I will do my part to see that they have the necessary equipment to stay safe doing their job and to make it safely back home to their families.

I am proud to have both a personal and professional relationship with the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, thanks to the close collaboration between them and the City of Poteau because they are our biggest employer. The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma is in process of building a $9.1 million community center in the Industrial Track.

The City of Poteau is now collecting an additional revenue under my suggestion to charge the septic businesses that dump their waste into our lagoon. These businesses now pay a fee for disposal of the waste where they had been dumping for free.

I want to express that I may live in Ward 1, but I represent ALL of the citizens of Poteau. I am always willing to help if the need arises. Over the years I have assisted many constituents with issues they may have had.

I am not afraid to vote against something I am not in favor of and that I know my constituents wouldn’t approve of either. The people have elected me to be a good steward of their tax dollars, and I will always keep that in mind upon the making of any decision.

You will see me out and around town as I do take my position on the council seriously.  Upon receiving my monthly city council packet the Friday night before our Monday evening meeting, I immediately start going over it. If there are any nuisance/abandoned properties on the agenda to vote on for property clean-up, I will drive by those properties to see them for myself so I can form my own opinion before taking any action on them.

I humbly ask the voters of the City of Poteau to cast their vote for me on April 1st.

Thank you,

Tommy G. Robertson
