Week ten is upon us as we continue to make our way through committees with the Senate Bills that have been sent over for House consideration. I have been negotiating with my Senate counterparts to get my bills heard in their committees and hopefully heard on the Senate floor.
Today, we held a joint session with the Senate honoring the 45th Infantry Division of the Oklahoma National Guard. A moving story was told about the liberation of a concentration camp in Europe during World War II and the 45th’s role in this liberation. This seems to be a lifetime removed for most of us, but as a child growing up, I remember the stories of some people that had lived these atrocities and told about them. I have to remember we were only twenty or so years removed from those events back then, where today we are eighty years from them. We also remembered the 45th’s role in our own personal horror story – the Murrah Building tragedy. I don’t believe we honor our military enough ever.
Last week, I attended Oklahoma FFA’s Legislative Banquet along with a couple of Haileyville students and their agriculture education instructor. I’m always privileged to honor our FFA programs in any way, as I have witnessed firsthand the benefits of this program. Rarely are these the kids we read about getting into trouble later in life. I’m reminded of my own FFA life lessons, and several I requote on a daily basis.
This week I’m honored to have Noah Hendrix, a young man attending Wilburton Public Schools, serving as a page in my Capitol office. I always enjoy getting to share what little knowledge I have of how the lawmaking process operates in this building.
