State Rep. Jim Grego

By Rep. Jim Grego

Words cannot express fully the gratitude I feel to the voters in House District 17 for electing me for a fifth term by acclimation. This means no one filed to run against me for the seat I have held for the past eight years. My seat is one of 26 House seats that did not draw an opponent. I will continue to serve the people of House District 17 to the best of my ability, and I thank each and every constituent.

Week 10 of the Second Session of the 60th Legislature is fairly quiet. Most Senate bills are maneuvering their way through our committee process, as our House bills move on the Senate side. A couple of my House bills, House Bill 1411 and House Bill 3404, were heard in Senate committees this week and will proceed to the full Senate for consideration in the near future. HB 1411 names the True Grit Trail winding through Eastern Oklahoma, and HB 3404 is a framework for setting up burn associations, making it easier on producers to perform controlled burns should they desire.

One bill that drew a lot of interest was Senate Bill 680, which has to do with a tax reduction on “heated” tobacco products. I did not support this bill. Proponents claim it is a better option for tobacco, therefore it should be taxed less. I don’t agree. The bill did pass, and the governor allowed it to become law without his signature.

I have the pleasure of having two pages this week. Both are students at Canadian High School. I always enjoy sharing my knowledge of the legislative process with our youth. It reminds me that whatever you read or see in the news, our future is in good hands.

As always, I’m thankful to the constituents of House District 17 for allowing me to serve. If I can help you in any way, I can be reached at (405) 557-7381 or by email at jim.grego@okhouse.gov.
