Eighty years and counting. Amazing that is how many years the Wilburton Lion’s Club has been sponsoring the Southeast Area Livestock Show in Wilburton. This weekend is “Showtime,” and I plan to be there assisting in any way I can. It always renews my faith in the future to watch these next generation leaders at their best.
“Aquamation” is a term I had never heard before participating in a recent study group hosted by the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture Food and Forestry. This is a process of rendering animal carcasses into a liquid similar to water in a matter of 18 hours. The end product is being touted as a super growth soil amendment to use in place of standard fertilization. As a natural skeptic, I have to question the ability of this process, but we will see.
In the meantime at the Capitol, House Appropriations & Budget subcommittees have been holding agency performance reviews and budget request hearings with each agency that receives state appropriations. This week and next we’ll hear from the six agencies that receive the largest amount of state dollars. These are the Oklahoma State Department of Education, the Oklahoma Regents for Higher Education, the Office of Management and Enterprise Services, the Department of Human Services, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and the Oklahoma Health Care Authority.
These hearings give lawmakers a chance to ask questions about how state tax dollars were spent for the current fiscal year and hear funding requests for the next fiscal year. We always want to make sure we are being good stewards our taxpayer dollars.
Finally, I wish to congratulate Jennifer Woods who had the honor of having the Choctaw Nation’s Community Center in Wilburton named after her. This is well deserved as Jenifer truly has a servant’s heart.
