By Rep. Jim Grego

Round one is in the books with the party primaries wrapping up last week. I really don’t know that there were any real surprises. I was proud that all the majority caucus incumbents retained their seats with the exception of one, who will be in the August runoff election. We hear constant chatter about how this legislative body is not listening to the people. In my mind, the people have spoken. If we weren’t listening, I’m pretty sure the outcomes of many races would have been different.

State Question 832 did surprise me somewhat as to the margin of defeat. This state question was supported by Oklahoma’s three most populist counties with the other 74 voting in opposition. This was a typical rural verses urban issue, and I’m proud to say rural won this one.

My office has been fielding some questions about the privatizing of McAlester’s Carl Albert Mental Health Center. I understand bids have been submitted but no action either way. I believe this inaction is a disservice to not only the employees but also the vendors who place proposals, as it is difficult in long-range planning.

It’s always a privilege to honor our veterans whenever the opportunity arises. This past week, I attended a luncheon hosted by the Choctaw Nation honoring their members who had served. I encourage everyone to thank our veterans who have served this great nation, especially as we prepare to celebrate our 250th birthday.

Things are fairly slow at the Capitol at the moment. The State Board of Equalization did meet last week to re-certify the funds available for appropriations by the Legislature for the next fiscal year, which starts July 7. There were no surprises out of this meeting.

This Friday is the deadline for interim study requests by House members. I’ll be interested to see what all gets requested.

As always, thank you for allowing me to serve. If I can help you in any way, I can be reached at (405) 557-7381 or by email at jim.grego@okhouse.gov.
