Week nine in the Legislature, and we seem to have weathered the storm of deadline week. Now, all is quiet on the home front. Senate bills have moved to the House to begin the process of making it through our committees. Our House bills began their journey over on the Senate side. In total, we sent 456 House measures for consideration, and the Senate sent us 285 measures for our consideration.
Budget is the talk of the town now as our House and Senate appropriation chairs have reached a consensus on what our budget priorities are. The next step is to present this to the executive branch for consideration. Hopefully, there won’t be any major differences. Then our House budget team can present this to our body for approval, and the Senate will do the same. Maybe we can actually sine die at an earlier date than the last Friday in May, as mandated by law.
I’ve been getting some questions on House Bill 3660, which actually deals with an alternate method of human remains disposal. This bill passed out of our chamber last week, and the fireworks began. Much information was posted on social media that may or may not have been truly accurate. This is a stark reminder of how opinions can spiral out of control based on what information is available.
This past week, I had several Eastern Oklahoma State College students stop by as well as President Harp. Oklahoma Cattleman’s also brought some of its leadership team by for some great discussions on what is and isn’t important to them. A common theme between both groups seems to be the upcoming state questions on property tax reform. It is always good to have local interaction at the Capitol. It tends to keep me grounded.
As always, I’m thankful to the constituents of House District 17 for allowing me to serve. If I can help you in any way, I can be reached at (405) 557-7381 or by email at jim.grego@okhouse.gov.
