State Representative Tim Turner (R-Kinta)

By Rep. Tim Turner

Vietnam veteran Larry J. Kirk, of Warner, was invited to participate in an Honor Flight this week. The Oklahoma Warriors Honor Flight is an organization dedicated to recognizing and honoring Oklahoma’s veterans by providing them with an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to visit the war memorials built in their honor. The flights left Monday and returned Tuesday.

I’m so grateful to this organization that helps all of us express our appreciation, respect and gratitude to these veterans who have given so much to keep our nation free and safe. Their bravery and sacrifice is honored and will always be remembered.

On a similar note, the House and Senate convened in joint session this week to celebrate the Oklahoma National Guard. We have about 9,000 soldiers, airmen and employees serving in the Guard. Some are keeping watch in harm’s way right now in the Middle East. The Guard has a rich history in Oklahoma, stretching back to 1890 when it was the Territorial Militia. Guard members have served in World Wars I and II and many deployments since then. Back home, they helped after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, and they help whenever called upon, whether it’s cleanup after tornadoes, fires, floods or other natural disasters, or something like COVID. I appreciate their willingness to stay prepared and their sacrifice of time away from family and the risk of putting themselves in harm’s way.

In the House this week, we considered numerous budget bills on the House floor. We’ve already passed our general appropriation’s bill to fund state services for Fiscal Year 2027, which starts July 1. This additional legislation sets the spending limits for our various state agencies.

We’re also hearing Senate bills in our various oversight committees. Here’s a look at the bills I passed this week:

Senate Bill 65 would allow any person to possess, store, distribute or administer emergency opioid antagonists, such as Narcan or test strips, so they could be used to help someone who has potentially overdosed on fentanyl.

Senate Bill 1257 would add tetrahydrocannabinol, THC, to the list of Schedule I controlled substances to model federal guidelines. This is an attorney general request.

Senate Bill 1749 is a cleanup bill from last year that would clarify mobile food preparation vehicles utilizing liquefied petroleum gas must be permitted by the Oklahoma Liquefied Petroleum Gas Board.

Senate Bill 1980 would create new criminal offenses and penalties for anyone stealing or altering a gift card or gift certificate.

Senate Bill 2118 would authorize county sheriffs to be able to use surplus funds from unpent commissary accounts for jail operations, inmate care or other jail-related expenditures.

As always, serving you is a privilege, not a guarantee. I and my family are proud to have this opportunity. If I can help you in my capacity as your representative, please do not hesitate to contact me at the Capitol. My office phone is (405) 557-7375, and my email is tim.turner@okhouse.gov.
