This week, I attended the 22nd Annual Legislative & Celebrity Showmanship Contest for the Oklahoma Youth Expo.

This event pairs a legislator or other statewide dignitary with a member of a local FFA or 4-H chapter, and we get to show the animal that they’ve raised to compete in the world’s largest junior livestock show.

I showed a sheep raised by Breckin Rossi, who is from Quinton 4-H. Breckin is an amazing young showgirl. She worked hard to get her sheep ready for this competition, and it was my honor for her to let me show it.

I am super lucky to have seven students from the district that showed at the OYE Legislative Show.

Chayda Carpenter, Muskogee County 4-H; Adysen Dishman, Warner FFA;  Jaylee Kelso, Quinton FFA; Chloe McGuire, Webbers Falls FFA; Quincy Pearce, Porum FFA; Whitney Reece, Bokoshe FFA; and Breckin.

House District 15 is an ag community, extremely rich in culture.

OYE is such a great experience for all the young people that participate. It teaches them leadership and life skills, how to perform under pressure and conduct themselves on a big stage. It also raises millions of dollars in scholarships for the youth who want to go on to college. This is particularly helpful for young people who want to pursue agriculture careers, such a big part of Oklahoma’s economy.

This week was a fun one in the Legislature. The speaker of the House and his wife invited the children and family members of House staff and legislator’s to attend Capitol Kids Camp. It was great to have my wife and son visit the Capitol for this two-day event. Several of our state agencies set up booths and hosted activities for the kids. They got to go on a Capitol scavenger hunt. They talked about what legislation they would propose if they were running the show. I think they had a good time.

We met in legislative session on Monday and Tuesday, then we took a few days to return to our districts for Spring Break. Next week, we’ll be back in session and hard at it as we have numerous bills to hear before our third-reading deadline for measures in their chamber of origin.

I have a handful of bills on the floor calendar that I’m hoping to get heard before deadline.

As always, serving you is a privilege, not a guarantee. I and my family are proud to have this opportunity. If I can help you in my capacity as your representative, please do not hesitate to contact me at the Capitol. My office phone is (405) 557-7375, and my email is tim.turner@okhouse.gov.
