State Representative Tim Turner (R-Kinta)

By Rep. Tim Turner

It’s state tournament time for high school basketball teams. I want to congratulate all the team members and coaches from our area that have made it to this level. I know it takes a lot of hard work, dedication and focus to earn a spot in a state tournament. I know it’s nerve-wracking, but I hope these teams can thoroughly enjoy the moment and have fun.

This past week in the House of Representatives was intense. Each day of the legislative session, we had dozens of bills to consider. On Wednesday alone, we had 115 bills on our daily floor calendar agenda. By 9 p.m. we’d heard 82 bills, and we went another hour and a half after that. This means a lot of reading, a lot of listening to questions and debate and then being asked to push our red or green buttons to vote yes or no on each measure presented.

Thankfully, I received 90 yes votes and no votes against House Bill 3759, allowing this to advance to the Senate. This is a cleanup bill that would make sure all temporary allocations made to school districts by county excise boards are set prior to June 30 so the money can be available by July 1, when the next fiscal year starts. This was a constituent request from Haskell Schools. If the Senate approves it and the governor signs it into law, it will be great news for this school district and others in this same boat.

I also presented House Bill 3114 on the House floor. This would remove DUI with great bodily injury from the list of crimes eligible for Oklahoma Department of Corrections’ GPS monitoring. People who injure others while driving under the influence deserve to spend their time of incarceration inside of a prison and not at home on an ankle monitor. I’m a coauthor on this bill.

This coming week, we’ll have several days of floor sessions, and then we’ll take some time to enjoy Spring Break with our families at home in our districts. I’m sure teachers and students will be glad for this break as well. Then it will be back to work to finish school and our legislative session.

As always, serving you is a privilege, not a guarantee. I and my family are proud to have this opportunity. If I can help you in my capacity as your representative, please do not hesitate to contact me at the Capitol. My office phone is (405) 557-7375, and my email is tim.turner@okhouse.gov.
