Daphne Greer Gossett of Heavener, Oklahoma was born October 28, 1930 to Reginald and Iva Oliver Greer in Poteau, Oklahoma. She left this life on August 28, 2020.
After graduating from Poteau High School, Daphne moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas where she attended The Sisters of Mercy nursing school. After graduating from nursing school she returned to Poteau and worked at the Poteau hospital.
While living in Poteau she was introduced to Elvin Dee Gossett, who shortly after meeting her, surprised her with a proposal of marriage. During their marriage Elvin was in the Air Force which led the family overseas, living in England for a few years. Daphne made the trip back to the United States from England on a ship with their three young girls. Once Elvin retired, the family moved to the Conser, Oklahoma area where they remained and raised their four girls.
They stayed happily married until his death in 1989. Daphne never remarried, saying no one could take the place of Elvin.
Daphne was always extremely close to her children and grandchildren. All of her grandchildren called her Grammie. There was seldom a day that she didn’t have one with her because they loved going to Grammie’s house. Her grandkids did no wrong. She was a homemaker who cooked every meal, breakfast, dinner, and supper. She was known to make some of the best fried catfish. She cooked and baked for every holiday making sure her children and their families would be home for the holidays. Daphne enjoyed traveling. Her trip to Hawaii was her favorite. She enjoyed reading Zane Grey books, watching westerns, going to flea markets, watching her hummingbirds at the feeders, fried squash, and hot tea. She loved telling stories about her younger days. She has left behind many wonderful memories that her family will cherish.
She is survived by one brother; Ron Greer of Carnegie, Oklahoma; four daughters, Zel and husband Rickie McDaniel of Heavener, Oklahoma; Rhonda and husband Klent Deatherage of Hodgen, Oklahoma; Glenda and husband Chris Crouch of Heavener, Oklahoma; and Renee and husband Rusty Farmer of Heavener, Oklahoma. She leaves behind three granddaughters, five great granddaughters, and two great grandsons. She was preceded in death by her Parents, husband Elvin Gossett, one grandson Jayson Burgess, a sister Novella Harrison, two brothers J.C. Greer and Regean Greer.
Funeral Service will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 31, 2020 at Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Paul Crouch officiating. Burial will follow in Heavener Memorial Park under the direction of Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home of Heavener, Oklahoma.
Pallbearers will be: Will Peavy, Greg Roberts, Rickie McDaniel, Klent Deatherage, and Chris Crouch.
Mrs. Gossett will lie in state from Noon until 6:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home.
