Funeral Service for Alton Thomas “Pod” Black, 89 of Spiro, Oklahoma will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Spiro, Oklahoma. Burial will follow at New Hope Cemetery in Spiro, Oklahoma with military honors. Viewing will be Tuesday, June 13, 2023 from 12pm – 7pm at the funeral home.
Pod was born on June 29, 1933 in Tucker, Oklahoma to Willie (Kiningham) Black and Arther Black and passed away on June 11, 2023 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his wife; Martha Sue Black, daughter; Debbie Russell, son; David Russell, grandson; Benjamin Russell, brother; Lemuel Black, and sister; Eleanor Curry. Pod worked for Mid South Dredging for over 40 years as a chief engineer or also known as a “River Rat”. He was a United States Air Force Veteran and a charter member of the Spiro VFW post 4884.
Survivors include his daughter, Gayle Black and companion Jackie Carlile; sons, Dan Russell and wife Jessica, Darrell Russell and wife Karen, Chris Russell and wife Pam; grandchildren, Glen Russell and wife Steffenie, Logan Russell and wife Taylor, Amy Orand and husband Troy, Jamy Potter and husband Skip, Amber Jones and husband Cody, Amanda Magruder and husband Matt, Greg Cox and wife Erica, Jennifer Hopping and husband Jim; great grandchildren, Megan Powell, Chris Powell, Alex Allen, Conner Scott, Gavin Potter, Cain Scott, Brent Potter, Brayden Barton, Lucas Magruder, Cody Hopping, Makayla Hopping and Sophie Anglen, Arwen Russell, Rue Russell, Carter Cox, and Vivian Cox, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and loved ones.
Pallbearers will be Dan Russell, Darrell Russell, Chris Russell, Glen Russell, Logan Russell, Greg Cox, and Brett Newman.
