Graveside services for August Grover Monks, 91, of Panama, Oklahoma, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 2, 2024, at Shady Point Cemetery in Shady Point, Oklahoma, with Jim Cook officiating. Burial will follow at Shady Point Cemetery under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau, Oklahoma.
August was born on August 20, 1933, in Cameron, Oklahoma, to Dave and Minnie Monks. He passed away on November 25, 2024, in Panama, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Viola and Lois; and three brothers, Alfred, Dave, and W.C. The family extends a special thank you to his loving caregiver, Cynthia.
At the young age of 15, August began working at the strip mines, and later worked at Hard Rock mines in Colorado. He returned home for the birth of his first daughter and spent 20 years working as a butcher at Safeway and A&P in Kansas City. August had a deep love for hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors. August was a man of faith who knew the Lord and was ready when He called him home.
August is survived by his daughters, Barbara Monks and Kathy Buttress; son, Randall Monks and wife Tina; four grandchildren, Kelly Young, Ashley Mize, Patrick Monks, and Billy James Buttress; eight great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Grayson, Kinley, Reed, Moses, August, Brock, and Lexi; one brother, Frank Monks and wife Avon; and his beloved dog, PeeWee Monks.
