
Following high school, David began his career working at Scott’s Glass in Pocola, Oklahoma, crafting stained glass. When Scott’s Glass closed, he joined his father in the family business, where he became a licensed plumber, electrician, and HVAC technician. Embracing his father’s legacy, David continued the family tradition, passing on his knowledge and skills to his own son, David William, whom he trained in the same trades.
David was deeply devoted to his family and leaves behind his loving wife of 40 years, Cindy Akins; his beloved son, David William Akins, and his fiancé Alexa Swinford; his sisters, Darla Humphries and her husband Ronnie of Monroe, OK, and Diane Cox and her husband Andy of Panama, OK; nieces Madeline and her husband Eric Martin of Wister, OK, and Emily Humphries of Monroe, OK; and his cherished fur babies, Butters, Sadie, Bruiser, Dafina, and Bissie. David also leaves behind numerous cousins, extended family members, and friends.
A funeral service celebrating David’s life will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at Evans Chapel of Memories in Poteau, Oklahoma, with Jim Cook officiating. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Poteau, under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau, Oklahoma.
Pallbearers honoring David’s memory will be Kenneth Thompson, Jody Thompson, Charley Thompson, Jason Smith, Creed Smith, and Fred Mendoza.
David will be remembered for his hard work, dedication to family, and the warmth he brought into every room. He will be missed deeply by all who knew and loved him.
