Shirley June (Ward) Akers, 87, of Van Buren, Arkansas, passed away on December 20, 2024, in Van Buren. She was born on August 19, 1937, in Bakersfield, California, to Dora (Boatright) Ward and Guy Ward. Shirley was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, known for her warm heart and dedication to her family and faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 62 years, Ronald Akers; two sisters, Bernice Chronister and Irene Sallee; and three brothers, John Ward, Bo Ward, and Jake Ward. Shirley had a deep love for children and enjoyed her time volunteering for Vacation Bible School each year. She also had a passion for canning and took great pride in taking care of her cows while her husband traveled for work.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Sherry Veerkamp and husband Sonny; her son, Steven Akers and wife Susan; her grandchildren, Jason Woodall and wife Maria, Chris Woodall, Alicia Skinner and husband Tim, Matthew Akers and wife Erin, and Stephanie Gillham and husband Thad. She also leaves behind sixteen great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at Evans Chapel of Memories in Poteau, Oklahoma, with Reverend Jim Reed and Reverend Jim Seale officiating. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Poteau. Viewing  will take place on Monday, December 23, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM at Evans & Miller Funeral Home in Poteau.
Pallbearers will include Jason Woodall, Chris Woodall, Matt Akers, Dennis Yochum, Ronnie Ward, and Danny Ward. Honorary Pallbearers are Jerry Gregg, Paul Mode, and Aud Balentine.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gideon Bibles, P.O. Box 691, Poteau, Oklahoma 74953.
