RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. –  At the annual Great American Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Retreat in Magnolia, Arkansas, the conference awarded Southern Nazarene University its inaugural SAAC Cup.

To determine the GAC SAAC Cup champion, the league created a point system based on planning and leading mental health activities, holding campus SAAC meetings, completing NCAA Legislative Grids on time, leading Community Service activities and participating in GAC SAAC meetings.

The Crimson Storm SAAC planned and executed events surrounding the Green Bandana project, Psychology of an Athlete and various community service events.

Southern Nazarene’s SAAC officers for 2023-2024 consisted of President Carlos Zepeda, football; Vice President Lauryn Reither, basketball; Secretary Kaley Brubaker, volleyball; Executive Team Officers Aaron Fellows and David Armijo, football; Whitney Bowie and Tatum Smith, volleyball.

Ramirez, Bowie, and advisor Steve Johnson represented Southern Nazarene when it received the award from GAC Senior Associate Commissioner Audra Kedy.

At July’s retreat, the attendees heard a presentation from Earl Young’s Team about the importance of bone marrow registries and the process for hosting a drive on campus and Mike Hansen presented about Social Discipline. They volunteered at the Magnolia Arts Center, listened to a mental health presentation, participated in team building and leadership exercises.

The GAC’s National SAAC Rep, Avery Hellmuth, from Oklahoma Baptist, led a national update where the group discussed sports wagering and closed with its GAC SAAC Business session for the summer.
